Future of Coal: Is Coal Fired Thermal Power Generation Coming To An End?

Nowadays in Power Generation, the most sought after type of power is from Renewable Energy sources. The coal based power generation, though still the bulk of power being generated especially in India, has become unpopular due to its inherent pollution and other environmental issues and is being labeled as 'Sin' category, in all circles. As such, various restrictions and mandatory provisions are being enforced by different authorities to allow set-up and operation of coal based power plants.  On the other hand rapid expansion / addition of power plants of the renewable energy type are being done and among those most notably is PV Solar. Due to this, new challenges in operating the coal based thermal power plants, which did not existed earlier appeared in the horizon requiring special attention. Among such challenges, low-load / below technical-minimum load operation, fluctuating load operation, frequent start/stop type of operation, without stressing the equipment and without co

Welcome reader, Our generation, who joined NTPC Ltd. during early 80’s of last century, got wonderful opportunity to learn first, because of rapid expansion in infrastructure industries with subsequent breeze of openness after reform and technological uplift during post-globalization. We were also fortunate to remain in learning curve during our entire service period as our company was continuously growing. We were part of the growth of our organisation from 0 MW in 1980 to a of 50GW (in 2019) capacity and transition from ‘Subcritical’ technology to ‘Supercritical’ technology and introduction of large renewable solar PV stations. By this time India’s Installed capacity of Thermal Power also grew from 15 GW. to 225 GW as on 31rst March’20. The number of power generating stations and per-capita consumption (from 175kWh to 1200kWh) also increased many fold. However, during this period, because of change in business model due to stiff competition, job outsourcing becomes a new norm which
